Tower Hamlets Article 4 direction – what does it mean for you?

The Tower Hamlets local authority plans to introduce a borough-wide Article 4 Direction, which would effectively  remove ‘permitted development rights’ for small HMOs.  This would mean that planning permission must be obtained before development can take place. In this post we review the Tower Hamlets Article 4 direction – what does it mean for you?

What would the changes mean?

The proposed changes would mean that the local authority in Tower Hamlets would be able to manage the future development of small scale HMOs via their planning powers.  Additionally, the changes would allow local people to have their say on individual planning applications.

When will the changes come into play?

The consultation period for the plans has now closed. The Mayor will consider the comments that are received during a Cabinet meeting which will take place in December. If the Article 4 direction is confirmed, it will come into play on 1st January 2021.
